Staff Platform Engineer

About the role

This role involves designing, building, and evolving the platform services, infrastructure, and internal tooling that support OpenSea's products. The engineer will take ownership of complex technical systems from their initial definition through implementation, ensuring a balance between scalability, reliability, maintainability, and the overall developer experience. A key aspect of the work includes enhancing observability, monitoring, and alerting across all systems.

The position also focuses on integrating and improving AI skills and tools to make systems more accessible and easier to contribute to. This includes expanding CI coverage to enhance correctness and AI verifiability. The engineer will collaborate closely with product teams to speed up the build and deployment of critical products, contributing to the overall efficiency of development cycles.

Candidates should have at least seven years of software engineering experience, specifically in building large-scale backend or platform systems. The work requires a strong understanding of platform engineering principles, developer tooling, CI/CD, and operational best practices. Success in this role means delivering thoughtful, scalable solutions to ambiguous technical problems and making independent technical decisions that prioritize long-term system health.

The compensation for this role ranges from $190,000 to $345,000 annually.

• 7+ years of software engineering experience building large-scale backend or platform systems
• Strong fluency in JVM languages such as Kotlin or Java
• Experience designing and operating distributed systems, backend services, and modern cloud infrastructure
• Strong understanding of platform engineering principles, developer tooling, CI/CD, observability, and operational best practices
• Demonstrated ability to own complex, ambiguous technical problems and deliver thoughtful, scalable solutions
• Excitement for making independent technical decisions balancing reliability, scalability, performance, and long-term maintainability
• Experience leveraging AI tools and workflows to improve engineering quality, efficiency, and team effectiveness
