About the role

In this role, you will be responsible for monitoring transactions and investigating suspicious activities within Alpaca's cryptocurrency operations. You will utilize blockchain analytics tools to assess risks and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

You will work within a global team that values diversity and collaboration. Success in this position involves effectively integrating compliance measures into Alpaca's services while maintaining a high level of autonomy in a fully remote environment.

The salary range for this position is between $68,000 and $112,000, depending on experience.

Key Responsibilities:

• Transaction Monitoring: Perform daily review and disposition of transaction monitoring alerts (fiat and crypto) to identify unusual or suspicious activity.
• Investigate & Report: Conduct deep-dive investigations into complex user accounts and blockchain transactions. Draft high-quality narratives and prepare/file Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) with appropriate regulatory bodies (e.g., FinCEN).
• Blockchain Forensics: Utilize on-chain analytics tools (e.g., Chainalysis, TRM Labs, Elliptic) to trace cryptocurrency flows, identify high-risk wallet interactions, and assess illicit finance risks.
• KYC / EDD: Assist with escalated Know Your Customer (KYC) / Know Your Business (KYB) reviews, Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD), and OFAC sanctions screening.
• Rule Tuning & Optimization: Collaborate with the CCO and compliance engineering to refine and tune transaction monitoring rules, ensuring false positives are minimized while capturing actual risks.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with customer support, engineering, and product teams to integrate compliance controls seamlessly into the Alpaca API ecosystem.

What You Need (Qualifications):

• Experience: 2–5 years of experience in AML, transaction monitoring, or financial crimes compliance within a cryptocurrency exchange, fintech, or traditional financial institution.
• Crypto Knowledge: Strong understanding of blockchain technology, digital assets, and the specific AML risks associated with the crypto ecosystem.
• Regulatory Grasp: Solid understanding of BSA/AML regulations, OFAC sanctions, and FinCEN guidance regarding virtual currency.
• Analytical Skills: Proven ability to analyze complex financial data, connect the dots across different platforms, and write clear, concise investigative narratives.
• Tools: Hands-on experience with blockchain analytics tools and traditional fiat transaction monitoring vendors.
• Autonomy: High level of self-motivation and the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, 100% remote startup environment.
• Bonus: Relevant industry certifications (e.g., CAMS, CGSS, or crypto-specific certifications like CCAS/Chainalysis Reactor Certification) are a strong plus.
