Senior/Staff Software Engineer

About the role

In this position, you will be responsible for creating and maintaining backend services that handle high volumes of financial transactions, ensuring correctness and reliability. Your work will involve integrating with external partners and improving engineering quality across various domains.

You will collaborate with diverse teams within MoonPay and may also set technical direction and mentor junior engineers at the staff level. Success in this role means delivering impactful solutions while maintaining high standards in a fast-paced environment.

The salary range for this role is between $180,000 and $300,000, reflecting the competitive compensation structure at MoonPay.

• Design, build, and operate backend services written in Rust that process high volumes of financial transactions with strong guarantees around correctness, idempotency, and auditability.
• Own features end to end, from shaping the product spec through technical design, implementation, testing, deployment, and production monitoring.
• Integrate with external partners such as banks, payment processors, blockchains, and identity and compliance vendors, and build the abstractions that make those integrations reliable.
• Improve engineering quality across observability, incident response, security practices, and API design.
• Collaborate closely with product, compliance, and other engineering teams across MoonPay’s global network.
• (Staff level) Set technical direction for your area, mentor other engineers, and drive architectural decisions that span multiple teams.

• 5+ years of backend engineering experience (8+ for Staff), with a track record of shipping and operating production systems at scale.
• Strong backend experience with a statically compiled language (e.g. Rust, Go, C#, C++) is a must.
• Solid fundamentals in distributed systems, API design, data modeling, and asynchronous processing.
• Comfort working in domains where precision matters, such as financial systems, double-entry ledgers, reconciliation, or similarly correctness-critical software.
• A pragmatic, autonomous, ownership-driven mindset.
• Strong critical thinking, including in how you use AI tools.
• Interest in crypto, stablecoins, and the future of payments.
