Staff Data Center Operations Engineer

About the role

This role focuses on the physical infrastructure that supports Zscaler's large security cloud. You will be responsible for provisioning new hardware and network devices in a staging environment before they are deployed globally. This work directly contributes to expanding and supplementing the company's network, which is critical for its operations.

A key part of the position involves troubleshooting issues within the build environment. This includes repairing or replacing server and network components and infrastructure to ensure smooth operations. Success in this area requires a deep understanding of various types of servers, network devices, and their configurations.

Collaboration is essential, as you will work with maintenance, network, install, and platform engineering teams. Your tasks will include executing and validating build activities, as well as engaging in efforts to optimize existing processes. This role is suited for someone who can contribute to both hands-on technical tasks and process improvement.

The salary for this position ranges from $120,000 to $215,000.

• LINUX/UNIX command line: This skill is necessary for navigating and managing systems within the data center environment.
• BIOS: Understanding BIOS is required for configuring and troubleshooting server hardware.
• OOB mgmt (ILO, SAA, iDRAC, IPMI, etc): Experience with out-of-band management tools is used for remote server control and diagnostics.
• BASH: Basic scripting in BASH can help automate routine tasks and improve efficiency in operations.
• Python: Basic scripting in Python can be used for automation and custom tool development in the data center.
• Ansible: Familiarity with Ansible can be applied to automate build processes and configurations.

Reporting to the Datacenter Deployment Manager, you will:

• Provision new hardware and network devices in a staging environment that will be deployed globally to expand and supplement the Zscaler network
• Troubleshoot issues within our build environment and repair or replace server and network components and infrastructure
• Collaborate with the maintenance, network, install and platform engineering teams, execute and validate build activities and engage and assist in optimizing processes

What We’re Looking for (Minimum Qualifications):

• 3-5 years experience working in Data Center or hardware build and development environments
• Deep understanding of various types of servers, network devices and configurations, and physical connectivity
• Experience with the LINUX/UNIX command line, BIOS, OOB mgmt (ILO, SAA, iDRAC, IPMI, etc)
• Ability to occasionally lift and carry 80 lbs

What Will Make You Stand Out (Preferred Qualifications):

• Basic scripting capabilities - BASH / Python
• Familiarity with build automation technologies such as Ansible or PXE boot
• Familiarity with Jira, Confluence, or other ticketing and documentation tools
